“In diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” – Maya Angelou
Every day our classrooms, neighbourhoods, and communities become more diverse as people from different countries, cultures, religions and beliefs continue to spread out around the world. Different skin colors, languages, physical abilities, clothes, likes and dislikes are some of the types of diversity that we experience every day. How we respond to this diversity will determine not only our future as a person but our future as a society. On the 8th and 9th of April, children of Grade I learned about similarities and differences through a game. They experienced a sense of wonder that there is someone like them and also that there are differences in tastes and likes among their own peers. They learned to see similarities, respect others and also value differences. Children became little chefs and tossed fruits to make a simple yet delicious salad. While they enjoyed their salad, teachers gave an analogy of the world as the fruit salad. People are like fruits in the salad, different in appearances and tastes but come together to make this world a happy place!!
